Q & A

Who is Richmond Multisports?
RMS is an event production company, LLC with Laurie Mehler as President and race director with 8 years of experience. RMS was started in March of 2004. We specialize in triathlons only. These races are open to men, women, kids, relay teams, swim-bikers only, or swim-runners only, and corporate/club/training teams.  Our events are created for longevity with a full time career commitment behind them.  Each event is created with a win-win-win concept behind it, everyone wins: the triathlete, the venue, the charity, the volunteers, the sponsors, and RMS.

Does RMS own the races?
We own all 7 of our events.

Is RMS the same thing as RTC (Richmond tri club)?
No, this is a partnership relationship.  RMS is heavily affiliated with RTC and actually in a supportive positive contractual agreement. Each entity supports the mission of the other to grow and better the sport of triathlon in the Richmond area, inspiring more people to live and take part in this contagious sport!  The club offers socials, clinics, and has 1 race.  RMS produces 7 races and encourages triathletes to join the club to absorb all of it's benefits including the open water swims.  You will see a lot of overlap in the faces that lead, the people that are passionate about triathlons tend to what to make a difference whether it is with RMS or RTC, similar to the Richmond Road Runners and Richmond Sports backers running organizations.  We are blessed to have such an outdoorsy, sports driven city.

Does RMS give money back to the community?
We spend many work hours & dollars networking with local non-profit organizations (i.e. 3 YMCAs, Comfort Zone Camp, VCU's Massey Cancer Center) to support their mission financially and personally. We also donate to school groups for volunteering at our events. Each one of our events raises funds to support local charities. For example: the Shady Grove YMCA, Midlo Y, and Richmond County Y programs send underpriviledged kids to summer camp, and help needy families with fitness and kids programs.

How do you know who owns the event?
This is usually hard for the athlete to know, but basicallly it is who gets the entry fee money in the end. The registration company does the collecting, this makes it hard to know where the money goes. If you want to know, ask the race director. It is usually the event production company, but not always the case. For example the 3Sports Triathlon is owned by the Richmond Tri Club.

What is a title sponsor?
These awesome companies choose to take the lead in financially supporting the event; therefore the event is named after them (i.e. HHHunt, Napier Realtors, The Tavern Restaurant.) They have a passion for sports and fitness. They also support local community events.

What is a presenting sponsor?
These companies are next in rank to the title sponsor and listed every where the race name is listed. They are also involved with the packet pick-up location, and help "present" awards during the post race ceremonies.

What is a timing company vs a production company?
RMS hires other production companies that have chip timing equipment, these companies are also production companies. RMS is not a timing company at this time, no pun intended. We work closely with these companies to give you the most accurate result splits attainable. We are proud to work with Fred Sommers of Sommer Sports, and Greg Hawkins, owner of Kinetic Endeavors, a franchise of Setup Events.
